Turbobox

On December 31st of any given year, people resolve to get in shape and be healthier. The gym is packed, and dedicated gym-goers are hard pressed to find a treadmill or elliptical at peak gym hours. Running 3 miles on a treadmill everyday quickly becomes monotonous. As winter weather worsens, people throw in their fitness-resolution towels. However, innovative fitness programs are keeping many people on-track with their fitness goals.

I didn't know what to expect when I signed up for a cardio-kickboxing class at Boston University's FitRec. I had high hopes but low expectations. I naively entered the first class thinking we would throw some punches and do some kicks. Wrong! After an hour of jumping, punching, and kicking, I was exhausted. But, I also found a new fitness obsession: turbo kick.

Turbo Kick is not new, but it isn't widely advertised either. Created in 1997 by Charlene Johnson, turbo kick is one of four high-intensity workouts powered by Powder Blue Productions. According to the turbo kick website, exercise participants can burn up to 1,000 calories per workout! (Turbokick!)

It can be difficult to muster the determination to get to the gym when all you have to look forward to is a boring treadmill. But, with turbo kick, the workouts are never dull. The music, like the instructor, is upbeat, and the routine is fun (music)!
