Laasya 2010

The first ever intercollegiate Indian Classical Dance Competition was held Saturday, February 20th. Held in MIT's Kresge Auditorium, Boston University's Dheem and MIT's Natya coordinated the event. Between 150 and 200 tickets were sold for $10 each. Before the competition began, the MCs announced that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to fund relief work in Haiti.

The event began nearly thirty minutes late with the melodically intoxicating prayer to Ganesha, the lord of success. The six competing teams performed original, beautifully choreographed dances over the course of two hours. The combination of vibrantly colored costume and the powerful and evocative music brought Indian culture to life for those unfamiliar with its rich history.

University of Pennsylvania's Thillana received honorable mention for its performance. However, the judges advised the team to reconsider its costumes and music. Rutger's Natya was awarded 2nd place. The team received a $100 cash prize. The University of Maryland's Moksha won 1st place and a cash prize of $250.

Boston University's Dheem and MIT's Natya hope to make Laasya an annual event.
